The letter
When I was an Academy student about to wash out — furious all the time, dead certain I was the stupidest kid in my year — there was exactly one instructor who didn't look straight through me. Sensei Hideo stayed after lessons twice a week, even when I showed up sullen and snapping at him, even when I'd already decided I was hopeless. One afternoon he said, "You're not short on talent, kid. You're short on people willing to bet on you. So I'm placing mine." That bet rerouted my entire life. Last month I finally earned the master rank I'd been chasing for years, and afterward I just sat outside the hall and cried, thinking of him. Here's my trouble: I lost touch with him fifteen years ago. I just learned he retired and moved to some quiet village up in the mountains, and I have no idea how to even start tracking him down. How do I find the man who saved me — and what in the world do I say to thank someone for literally changing the course of my whole life? — Still Looking For My Sensei

Okay, you just described Iruka-sensei to me, and now I gotta sit down for a second. I was the dead-last knucklehead the whole village looked right through — pulled pranks just so somebody, anybody, would aim their eyes at me. And one teacher bought me a bowl of ramen at Ichiraku and told me he saw me. That bowl rerouted my entire life, ya know? So I get exactly why you cried outside that hall.
Here's the thing nobody's saying to you: quit sweating the perfect speech. You're building this giant thank-you in your head like it's gotta be as big as what he did. It can't be, and it doesn't have to be. You just gotta show up at his door so he can SEE you — the proof his bet paid off, standing right there breathing.
And go in person. Ask the old Academy, the village registry, anybody who knew him — people who bet on troublemakers get remembered by other troublemakers. Because here's what I'd bet: a retired teacher in some quiet mountain village wonders all the time whether any of it mattered. You're the answer to that. Don't make him wonder one more day. Being acknowledged by one person can save your whole life — I'd know. I'm not letting you quit on this one. Believe it!

Sasuke Uchiha weighs in
You asked the wrong question. "What do I say" is the thing you invented to keep from leaving.
I hunted my brother for years and ended him before I learned the truth he'd carried alone — for me. There was no conversation left to have. That silence is a weight you do not want to spend your life under.
So forget the speech. Fifteen years passed while you waited to be impressive enough to earn the visit. You never owed him a triumph. You owed him your presence, and that debt came due long ago. Go now, while there's still a door to knock on. The words will come, or they won't. It won't matter. Hn.
